The Croisette is open for business. The 2026 Cannes Film Festival officially launched at the Grand Théâtre Lumière with an opening ceremony hosted by French-Malian actress Eye Haïdara — and if night one is any indication, the next two weeks are going to be a masterclass in red carpet dressing.

The jury lineup alone is worth noting: Park Chan-wook made history as the first Korean jury president in Cannes history, flanked by a stacked committee that includes Demi Moore, Chloé Zhao, Ruth Negga, Stellan Skarsgård, Laura Wandel, Diego Céspedes, Isaach De Bankolé, and Paul Laverty. The evening closed with performances by Theodora and Oklou and a screening of Pierre Salvadori's The Electric Venus.

The Looks That Started It All

On the fashion front, the opening carpet delivered early. According to Vogue, Emily in Paris star Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu floated down the carpet in an airy purple Saint Laurent gown courtesy of Antony Vaccarello — fluid, romantic, and exactly the kind of statement that plays beautifully against the Riviera light. Demi Moore, pulling double duty as both jury member and style reference, showed up in a fitted, sparkly Jacquemus dress that was equal parts polished and charged.

What's already clear is that this year's carpet isn't leaning into any single aesthetic. Purple Saint Laurent and body-con Jacquemus in the same evening suggests the next two weeks will be less about one dominant trend and more about individual conviction — which, honestly, is when red carpet dressing gets interesting.

Cannes has always understood that cinema and fashion are in the same business: the art of making you feel something before a single word is spoken — and 2026 is already making its case.
